Description

Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. This is the ONLY example graded at this level by PSA with none higher! Outstanding high-grade example of Hall of Famer pitcher Chief Bender from the 1916 M101-4 set featuring a Famous and Barr advertising reverse. It is interesting to note that although Bender is identified with the Philadelphia Phillies on this card, he is pictured wearing his Philadelphia Athletics uniform from the 1914 season. The 1916 Famous and Barr set is identical in design to M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News, but with advertising on the reverse for the "The Boys’ Clothes Store of St. Louis - Famous and Barr Co. – St. Louis Foremost Boys’ Clothes Store." The St. Louis-based Famous and Barr Company was one of several regional advertisers to issue both the M101-4 and M101-5 series cards, and almost all Famous and Barr examples known are M101-5s. The significant rarity of this card is confirmed by the fact that only five Famous and Barr Chief Bender cards (including this one) have ever been graded by PSA (with an additional nine graded by SGC)! The offered card is bright and crisp with strong corners. The important advertising reverse is boldly printed and clean. This is a tremendous example of this rare advertising reverse, featuring a desirable Hall of Fame subject, which would be a worthy addition to any world-class M101-4, Chief Bender, or type-card collection.
