Issued in 1939 by Goudey Gum and catalogued R303-B in the American Card Catalog, this large-format (4-3/4 x 7-3/8 inches) set is printed on thin stock and was issued both in black and white and sepia. Offered is an attractive complete 24-card set, all of the black-and-white variety except for two sepias. Goudey selected the greatest stars of the day for inclusion in this instructional set (the reverse features playing tips on the finer points of the game). Rarely does a set have such a high concentration of major stars. More than half the players featured are Hall of Famers: Appling (Vg), Cronin (Vg-Ex), Dickey/sepia (Gd+), DiMaggio (Pr), Feller (Gd), Foxx (partially erased pencil mark on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), Gomez (partially erased pencil mark on reverse, otherwise Vg), Gordon (Fr), Greenberg (pencil mark on front, otherwise Fr), Herman (Vg), Lombardi (Pr-Fr due to small spots of paper loss), Ott (Pr), Simmons/sepia (Pr), and Vaughan (Vg). The example of Mike Kreevich is graded EX 5 by PSA. The nine-card balance grades six Vg, two Gd, and one Pr. For years this has been one of the most overlooked of all 1930s gum issues because grading companies simply did not have holders for this set, but that has changed with the introduction of larger-format holders by PSA and SGC which now allow for professional grading and encapsulation of this issue. Total: 24 cards.
