Description

Graded NM 84 by SGC. Magnificent high-grade example of Eddie Mathews’ rookie card. In addition to being his rookie card, 1952 Topps card #407 Eddie Mathews is also one of only a few key Hall of Famers in the rare high-number series. And as the last card in the set, it is also a condition rarity. Just as card #1 Andy Pafko was subject to wear due to gravitating to the top of the pile, #407 Mathews was subject to excessive wear at the bottom of the stack. In anything even resembling high grade, this has always been a very difficult card to find. The offered card has bold colors, a crisp image, strong corners with light touches of wear, and centering slightly toward the left (this card is frequently encountered with dramatic centering issues). The reverse of the card is clean with boldly printed text. Extremely attractive example (and, for this card, exceptionally high grade) of this important condition rarity that would be at home in a high-grade 1952 Topps set or Hall of Fame rookie-card collection.
