Lot # 227: 1911 E94 George Close Candy Honus Wagner SGC EX 5 - Red Background - Highest Graded!

Graded EX 5 by SGC. One of only five examples graded at this level by SGC with none higher! Outstanding example of Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Honus Wagner from the E94 George Close Candy set, one of the most popular and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. The E94 Wagner is considered by many to be among Wagner's most classic cards. While at a glance E94s might be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Mass. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that make reference to this company. This example has a bold image set against a striking red background, full borders, and light corner wear. The reverse features a checklist for the set. Caramel cards are rarely found in high grade. This is a superb example of the legendary Honus Wagner from this extremely scarce and classic 1910-era candy issue.
