Description

E94 candy card featuring Cleveland Naps Hall of Famer Cy Young in a pitching pose set against a gold background (one of the seven different background color variations of the set). This is a particularly fascinating card of Young, both because he is identified as “Old” Cy Young along the bottom border of the card and the image of Young used on this card pictures him in a Boston Red Sox uniform, even though he is identified with Cleveland on the card. The offered card features a bold gold background and a crisp image of Young. Graded POOR 1 by SGC due to creasing, heavy corner wear, and light soiling along the checklist reverse. While, at a glance, E94s might be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely separate set, though they share many of the same subjects and poses. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While most of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. This is a very presentable example of one of Cy Young's most classic cards from this rare, early 20th century candy issue.
