Lot # 24: 1909 W. W. Smith Postcards Honus Wagner "The Mighty Honus" SGC FAIR 1.5

Exceedingly rare Honus Wagner postcard issued in 1909. It features an illustrated portrait of Wagner and is titled "The Mighty Honus" in bold print at the base. A 1909 copyright by W. W. Smith appears in print directly below Wagner's illustration. This is one of three different postcards created by Smith in 1909, with the other picturing Ty Cobb and the third featuring Cobb and Wagner together. Though little is known about this three-card set, it seems almost certain that it was published at the time of the 1909 World Series between Pittsburgh and Detroit. Graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC, the card (3.5 x 5.5 inches) has a few minor creases. The postcard has been addressed and mailed. A postmark of "1909" appears on the back. It should be noted that the grade is largely predicated upon the fact that the postcard has been addressed and mailed. That aside, the card is closer to Gd-Vg in its overall appearance. An attractive example of this seldom-seen postcard.
