Pair of mementos dating to the games in which Cincinnati Reds star Pete Rose tied Ty Cobb's longstanding hits record and then subsequently broke the record. On September 8, 1985, Rose recorded two hits against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field to tie Cobb's record of 4,191 career hits. Offered is a scorecard from that game, which has been fully scored and noted as the record-tying game within the scorecard section by the scorer. Picturing Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg on the cover, the scorecard has been folded in half vertically and displays a heavy crease, but is otherwise in very good condition, with light toning on the scoring page but all notations are clean and legible. Accompanying the scorecard is a single-page scoresheet from the September 11, 1985, game in Cincinnati against the San Diego Padres. This sheet is the same style as those distributed within the press box to writers and others covering the game. According to our consignor, the sheet was obtained from Milton Richman, who was a columnist and editor for United Press International and subsequently was honored with the J. G. Taylor Spink Award from the BBWAA. The sheet has been folded in quarters, scored, and noted as the record-breaking game. Pete Rose has signed in blue Sharpie above the Cincinnati Reds box score. This is an interesting pair of items relating to this monumental event. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 2 items. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
