Description

Presented is an outstanding collection of 220 signatures belonging to players who appeared in games for the Pittsburgh Pirates from the 1880s to the 1920s. This collection is highlighted by 26 Hall of Famers, including Connie Mack, Casey Stengel, and Fred Clarke. This is part of a larger collection spanning the 1880s to modern day, presented in multiple parts within this auction and assembled over a period of decades by our consignor. His goal in assembling this collection was completion, and as such, the signatures appear on a variety of different mediums, with approximately three-quarters of this grouping signed on index cards, postcards, or government postcards. In addition to the many Hall of Famers present, there are a number of tough-to-find players and players who only appeared in a small number of professional games. The collection is broken down into three sections as categorized by our consignor, with players grouped into eras based on their first appearance with the Pirates. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1880s to 1900s (23 autographs): Keys: F. Clarke (HOF), Glasscock, Mack (HOF), McKechnie (HOF), and Billy Sunday. 2) 1910s (70 autographs): Keys: Four Carey (one 1964 Hall of Fame Postcard, one "Pirates Dodgers Hall of Famer", HOF), two Grimes (HOF), four Kelly (one 1978-1979 Dexter Press Hall of Fame Postcard, HOF), Southworth (HOF), two Stengel (HOF), and Dazzy Vance (HOF). 3) 1920s (97 autographs): Keys: Cronin (HOF), Cuyler (HOF), two Traynor (HOF), four L. Waner (one 1964 Hall of Fame Postcard, HOF), P. Waner (HOF), and Moses Yellowhorse. We cannot begin to quantify the amount of time and effort it took to assemble this collection. It is an incredible and immediate foundation for a similar assembly for the next generation of collectors! Total: 220 autographs. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
