Description

Pair of 1881 American Jockey Club programs. One program is for the spring meeting, and the other is for the fall meeting, both of which were held at Jerome Park Racetrack in New York. Founded in 1866 by a wealthy conglomerate that included Leonard Jerome and August Belmont, the American Jockey Club governed United States thoroughbred racing in the late 1800s and built Jerome Park, which held the first runnings of the Belmont Stakes. Because the Belmont Stakes was held at Jerome Park until 1890, the spring program features that year's Belmont Stakes, which was held on June 7 and had a $1200 purse. The dual-sided programs (3.75 x 5.75) are in Gd-Vg (spring) and Fr (fall) condition.
