Graded VG 3 by SGC. Scarce and desirable "script series" N172 Old Judge card of Hall of Famer Roger Connor of the New York Giants (pose #88-4). We believe the distinctive "script series" cards were issued in 1886 (although it is possible they date from early 1887). According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, Connor ranks as the 10th rarest Hall of Famer (out of 28) in the entire N172 set. Connor was one of the greatest sluggers of the 19th century. His 138 career home runs stood as the record until Babe Ruth exceeded it. The card displays honest corner wear, a small surface indentation on the left edge, and centering to the right. The back of the card is soiled and several light surface wrinkles are visible.
