Lot # 3206: 1938 R69 Gum, Inc. "Horrors of War" Partial Set (219/288) Including 16 PSA- and SGC-Graded Cards

Presented is a partial set consisting of 219 different (of 288 in the set) 1938 "Horrors of War" cards, including twenty-six of the forty-eight rare high numbers. Also includes three duplicates (#153, 240, and 245). Issued by Gum, Inc., "Horrors of War" is perhaps the single most famous nonsport-card set ever issued. The exceptionally colorful graphics and politically charged descriptions on their reverses also made this series one of the most controversial sets ever issued. "Horrors of War" was originally planned to be 240 cards, and was even sold as a 240-card boxed set. Later the forty-eight high-number cards (#241-288) were added to the set. The high-number series cards are particularly rare. Sixteen cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA (10) and SGC (6). Condition of the 195 cards #1-240 is 28% Ex to Ex-Mt (including a couple Nr/Mt), 63% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 9% lesser (including a few that measure a bit small and one altered). Condition of the twenty-seven high numbers is 18% Ex-Mt, 56% Vg-Ex to Ex, and 26% Gd to Vg (including one Pr). Keys: Two #240 "The Frightful Cost of War" (SGC VG 40 and Gd).
