Description

This extremely rare 28-page promotional booklet, issued in 1953 by the Glendale Provision Co., features images of all twenty-eight baseball cards offered by the company that year. “Glendale Meats,” as the set is commonly known, was a regional issue in the Michigan marketplace, and cards could be obtained only in packages of the company’s hot dogs. The set featured only Detroit Tigers players. This booklet pictures the front of each issued card. Each card is pictured on a separate page, below which appears the biographical data found on the reverse of the actual card (except for the player’s season stats and the contest offer for the chance to win a free trip for two to the World Series, which appear only on the cards). We have had the opportunity to offer only three examples of this special booklet in the past 22 years. The offered booklet (3.75 x 5.5 inches) is in exceptional condition and is one of the finest examples we have ever seen. Not surprising with regards to the condition, as this item has remained in the possession of our consignor since the day he received it as a kid in 1953. The inside pages are clean and bright, and the booklet is in overall Excellent condition. The front cover reads "Compliments of Glendale Meats Provison Co.," and the back cover has the Glendale logo and reads "Presented by Glendale 'King of the Hot Dogs.'" The booklet is accompanied by the original mailing envelope (Vg), which still has the address label affixed to the front. The 1953 Glendale Meats set is one of the most popular and attractive of all 1950s regional issues. This is an extraordinary rarity that all alone is the moral equivalent of a complete Glendale Meats set and would be the perfect complement to any Glendale Meats collection, especially a complete high-grade set.
