Description

Graded VG 3 by SGC. This extremely unusual and rare postcard captures New York Giants pitcher Christy Mathewson warming up on the sideline before Game 2 of the 1913 World Series. The preprinted caption below his image reads “Our Matty – Chris Mathewson, the World’s Greatest Pitcher. – This photograph was taken at Shibe Park, October 8th, 1913.” Mathewson defeated Eddie Plank and the Philadelphia Athletics 3-0 in Game 2 of the 1913 World Series, held at Shibe Park on October 8th. Unfortunately, that game represented the high point for Mathewson and the Giants, as they were easily defeated in five games by the powerful A’s. This is an extreme rarity and one of Mathewson's most interesting cards. Produced by Pastime Novelty Co. of New York, we have seen only a handful of these over the years. The postcard exhibits superb image clarity and a slight diamond cut along the top edge. While the postcard has not been used or postmarked, there are a few partially erased pencil notations on the reverse. This is an appealing example of this extremely rare and substantial postcard that would be a worthy addition to any Christy Mathewson, Hall of Fame, or postcard collection.
