Four-page, fold-over contract dated May 11, 1968, between James "Catfish" Hunter and the Oakland Athletics. Signed on the interior by James Augustus Hunter, A's owner Charles O. Finley, and American League president Joseph Cronin. The one-year agreement calls for Hunter to receive a salary of $23,500 for the 1968 season. Per special covenants, "this salary of $23,500.00 is retroactive to the beginning of the 1968 season." A five-time World Series Champion, Hunter is one of the most accomplished pitchers in Major League history. Among his notable achievements on the mound were a Cy Young Award, ERA title, and eight All-Star Game appearances. Hunter finished his career in 1979 with a record of 224-166 and a 3.26 lifetime ERA. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1987. This is just the second Hunter contract we have ever offered. The contract (8-1/2 x 11 inches) has two horizontal folds and light creasing. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
