Description

Two-page handwritten letter dated June 24, 1932, by tennis great Ellsworth Vines to his girlfriend (and future wife), Julia Verle Low, written during his Wimbledon-winning year. This is one of a series of 11 letters, each being offered individually in this auction, that Vines wrote to Low, all originating from the family's estate. Dated June 14-30, the letters overlap with the 1932 Wimbledon Championships (June 20-July 2). All of the letters and envelopes are penned on Hotel Metropole (London) stationery and mailed in matching envelopes. The pages (6 x 7.75 inches) display a horizontal fold but are otherwise in Excellent condition overall. A transcribed letter from Vines' son, Ellsworth Vines III, accompanies the piece. The Greatest Athlete of All Time is a 2004 biography by Ellsworth Vines III about his father, featuring his father's letters. Please note that the envelope has the wrong date/time stamp. It likely housed a different letter and was switched by mistake at some point. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
