Lot # 1778: 1944 to 1963 Artvue and Albertype Hall of Fame Plaque Postcard Collection (65)

Hall of Fame black-and-white postcards were only produced between the years 1944 and 1963, during which time a total of ninety-five different players were issued. Two companies manufactured the cards for the Hall of Fame over that twenty-year span: Albertype (1944-1952) and Artvue (1953-1963). Offered here is an attractive collection of fifty-four Albertypes and eleven Artvues. Condition ranges from Vg to Nr/Mt (averaging Vg-Ex/Ex), with 12% lesser (including three due to pencil on the reverse). This collection consists of the following: 1) Albertype Type 1 (11 cards): Bresnahan, Cartwright, Comiskey, J. Collins, Delahanty, Cummings, Jennings, Duffy, B. Johnson, Keeler, and O'Rourke. 2) Albertype Type 2 (40 cards): Anson, Alexander, Brouthers, M. Brown, Bulkeley, Burkett, Chadwick, Chance, Chesbro, Clarke, Cochrane, E. Collins, Ewing, Frisch, Gehrig (Vg-Ex), Grove, Hornsby, Hubbell, W. Johnson, Kelly, Landis, Lajoie, Mack, Mathewson, McCarthy, McGinnity, McGraw, Pennock, Radbourne, Plank, Ruth (Vg)+, W. Robinson, Speaker, Sisler, Traynor, Spalding, Wagner, Waddell, Wright, and Young. 3) Artvue Type 2 (11 cards): Barrow, Bender, Brouthers, Bresnahan, Burkett, M. Brown, Chadwick, Cartwright, Chesbro, Chance, and Clarke. 4) Albertype Postcards (3 cards): Baseball in 1866, Doubleday Portrait over Mantel, and Trade Cards. These B&W Hall of Fame postcards have always been prized as special by autograph collectors, but are just being discovered by card collectors and appreciated for their scarcity and their significance as an official Hall of Fame card set produced specifically for sale as souvenirs at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
