Description

Near-complete set of 1921 W551 strip cards (missing only Babe Ruth), highlighted by seven Hall of Famers including Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Casey Stengel, and presented on a single nine-card panel (as issued when originally sold). These colorful cards are referred to as "strip cards" because they were originally issued in uncut sheets or "strips" and were cut apart, as intended, with scissors. In the early days of the organized hobby, strip cards did not "get any respect." It is only in recent years that collectors have begun to appreciate the distinctive look and tremendous value these cards represent. The panel features (from left to right) Cobb (HOF), Pipp, Speaker (HOF), Barnes, Stengel (HOF), Bancroft (HOF), Baker (HOF), Johnson (HOF), and Sisler (HOF). The panel is in outstanding condition with vibrant colors, impressive registration, honest wear on the corners, an irregular cut along the left edge, and a clean blank back. Presented in a nine-card panel as seen here (as opposed to cut into individual cards as usually seen), this near-complete W551 set (minus one) is particularly rare, striking, and unusual. Dimensions: 12.5 x 2.25 inches.
