Description

Graded NM/MT 8 by SGC. One of three examples graded at this level by SGC with none higher! Beautiful high-grade example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg's rookie card from the classic 1934 R320 Goudey set. This is perhaps Greenberg's most popular card and one of the most striking cards in the entire 1934 Goudey set. "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg was one of the greatest sluggers of the 1930s, leading the American League in home runs on four separate occasions. In 1938 he challenged Babe Ruth's single-season home-run record only to fall short by two with 58. The previous year Greenberg drove in 183 runs, the second-best mark in American League history and third best all time behind Lou Gehrig (184) and Hack Wilson (190). In Greenberg's six full seasons from 1934 through 1940 (he was hurt in 1936 and lost nearly five full seasons due to military service from 1941 to 1945), he averaged 39 home runs and 150 RBI. The offered example has brilliant colors, outstanding registration, and strong corners. Clean, boldly printed reverse. This is a fantastic high-grade example of one of the classics of 1930s bubble-gum cards.
