Description

Rarely offered example of Grover Alexander's true rookie card, from the condition-sensitive M101-2 Sporting News supplement set. This sepia-tone premium set was issued with The Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day (November 23, 1911, in this case) and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and the thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage, but the offered example possesses exceptional eye appeal despite the assigned grade, with light corner wear (weaker lower right) and intact edges. This example has an outstanding image of Alexander pitching. Graded POOR 1 by PSA largely due to a few creases and a single horizontal fold line. Not all collectors recognize supplements as cards due to their size and thin stock, but for those who do not make this distinction, the M101-2 Sporting News supplement of Grover Alexander without question is the earliest issue for this Hall of Famer and represents his rookie card. Dimensions: approximately 7-7/8 x 9-3/4 inches.
