Description

Original Willard Mullin cartoon artwork (mixed media on coquille board) of legendary heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano. Signed by the artist in the lower right corner. Marciano has beautifully signed this piece in black ink. He has scripted "Tom Billmoore/Keep Punching/Rocky Marciano" directly above his image. A small notation printed in pencil on the reverse reads "Signed in person at Toots Shore, N.Y." Toots Shor Restaurant, which was located on 51 West 51st Street, was one of New York's legendary watering holes for the celebrities and sporting figures during the 1940s and 1950s. Willard Mullin was one of America's best-loved sports cartoonists, not to mention one of the most prolific (he worked for the New York World-Telegram from 1934 to 1966). Today, he is best remembered today as the creator of the "Brooklyn Bum," one of the most iconic images in the field. The artwork (13 x 19.5 inches) displays light toning along the edges, a tiny tear on the left edge, and evidence of mounting removal on the reverse. In Good to Very Good condition. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
