Description

Rare and early Philadelphia Athletics program, issued for a game against the Chicago White Sox on July 23, 1906 at Columbia Park in Philadelphia. The cover features an illustration of a generic Athletics batter with a catcher and umpire in position, as well as the year ("1906"). The preprinted lineups include Hartsel, Davis, Murphy, Cross, and Knight for Philadelphia (as well as Hall of Fame pitchers Plank, Waddell, and Bender, all of whom have been crossed out in pencil as Coombs was the A's hurler for this game). The White Sox lineup includes Isbell, Davis, Dougherty, and Tannehill (as well as White and Walsh who have also been crossed out in pencil). Neatly scored to record a 4-0 Chicago victory. 1906 was a historic year for the White Sox, who won nineteen consecutive games in August en route to securing their second American League pennant. They would go on to face their cross-town rival Chicago Cubs, who would finish record the best winning percentage baseball history with a 116-36 record. The White Sox would ultimately pull-off a historic upset, beating the Cubs four games to two and securing the franchise's first World Series title. The ten-page program (6.25 x 9.25 inches) displays a few light creases, a few small areas of paper loss on the front cover, light staining, and blue writing on the front cover as well as scoring pages. Oxidation affects the staples. In Very Good condition overall.
