Presented is a program from the Staten Island Stapletons, an independent football team that formed in 1915 and competed in the NFL from 1929 to 1932. The offered program is for a November 9, 1924 match-up against the Riverside, NJ team. Based in the Stapleton section of Staten Island, the "Stapes" became one of the most popular and dominant football clubs in the area. They were regarded as the New York Metropolitan Champions in 1923 and 1924 due to their victories against other prominent independent professional teams. When the New York Giants formed and began playing at the Polo Grounds in 1925, a rivalry with the Stapletons ensued. From 1929 to 1932 the Stapes were led by future Hall of Famer Ken Strong, who played for the team until their decline after the 1932 season, when he left to play for the New York Giants. The program (6 x 9 inches) displays a few scattered creases, several small tears on the front and back covers, and a couple spots of light staining. The interior pages have separated entirely from both covers. In Fair condition overall.
