Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. This is the only example that has ever been graded by PSA! Extremely rare candy card of Walter Johnson from one of the few issues dating from the late 1920s. Although the manufacturer is not identified, advanced collectors have always referred to it as the Star Player Candy set. The extraordinary discovery of unopened packs and a Dockman's "Headliners & Gum" box offered in REA's 2009 auction revealed that the manufacturer of this rare issue is John H. Dockman & Sons. Unlike the 1928 Star Player Candy cards (which are blank-backed), the reverse of the 1929 cards have a short biography and a card number in the upper left corner. The sepia-toned cards measure 1-7/8 x 2-7/8 inches and are printed on thin stock. The player's name is printed below the image without a team designation. At this point in time only three players from the 1929 Star Player Candy series are known and have been checklisted in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards: #21 Babe Ruth, 32 Lou Gehrig, and 42 Walter Johnson. Collectors have always appreciated this rare and distinctive candy issue, and some have suggested that based on its year of issue, perhaps this set should have always been catalogued an "E" card set. Bright and clean, the card is accurately graded due to creasing near the corners and light toning on front and back. Johnson is pictured in a crisp, throwing pose. The reverse is boldly printed. This is an extremely rare Walter Johnson card from this unusual candy issue.
