Description

Presented is a very attractive and consistent near-complete set (272 of 274 cards) of 1953 Topps, one of the most significant of all postwar baseball card issues. Missing only #82 Mantle and 244 Mays for completion (both offered as separate lots in this auction). Condition is 70% Vg to Vg-Ex (including a few Ex) and 30% lesser (including a few altered with erasure marks). We have selected four cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 Robinson (FAIR 1.5), 10 Burgess SP (Fr), 27 Campanella (VG 3), 37 Mathews (Pr), 41 Slaughter (Vg-Ex), 43 McDougald SP (0/100 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 54 Feller (Gd), 61 Wynn SP (Gd), 62 Irvin (Ex+), 76 Reese (95/5 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt+), 77 Mize (Vg+), 78 Schoendienst (Vg-Ex), 81 Black SP (Vg-Ex+), 86 Martin SP (slight trim, otherwise Gd+), 87 Lopat SP (95/5 T/B, otherwise Vg+), 104 Berra (Gd+), 114 Rizzuto (Fr due to small spot of paper loss on reverse), 119 Sain SP (Vg), 138 Kell (partially erased writing on top border, otherwise Vg+), 147 Spahn (Vg), 149 D. DiMaggio (Fr-Gd), 151 Wilhelm SP (VG-EX 4), 162 Kluszewski SP (Vg+), 191 Kiner (Vg+), 207 Ford (Pr), 220 Paige (GOOD 2), 228 Newhouser (Pr-Fr), 246 Face RC (Pr), 254 Roe (erased top border, otherwise Gd), 258 Gilliam RC (Vg), 263 Podres RC SP (Pr), 264 Woodling (Vg+), 265 Jensen SP (Vg), 273 Haddix RC SP (Vg), and 280 Bolling RC SP (Vg). This is a very attractive, mostly mid-grade near-complete set (minus two) of one of card collecting's most popular issues. Total: 272 cards.
