Lot # 2579: 1967 Kansas City Chiefs vs. Green Bay Packers Super Bowl I Program

Program issued for Super Bowl I between the Green Bay Packers, champions of the NFL, and the Kansas City Chiefs, champions of the AFL, held on January 15, 1967, at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Encapsulated and graded NM 9.4 (with white pages) by CGC. Although Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt is credited with naming the championship game the "Super Bowl" at the time, it did not become the game's official title until 1969. That fact is evident by the title of the program: "World Championship Game/AFL vs. NFL." This first "World Championship Game" marked the official beginning of the historic merger between the NFL and AFL, which was officially completed in 1970. Green Bay upheld the honor of the older, more established NFL by defeating Kansas City 35-10, thereby giving legendary coach Vince Lombardi the first of his two consecutive Super Bowl victories. The program (8 x 11 inches) displays light-to-moderate handling wear, with a small patch of surface wear along the front cover and a few pages displaying small edge tears. Please note a chunk is missing off the top right of page seven. This is a well-preserved example of this desirable and historic souvenir commemorating the inaugural Super Bowl.
