Graded NM 7 by PSA. One of only two examples graded at this level with none higher! Extremely high-grade example of Sherry Magee (Philadelphia Phillies) from the E94 George Close Candy set featuring a striking purple background and a rare "Your Out!" overprint. "Overprinting" refers to the rare practice of a company taking cards already printed (in some cases even issued by another manufacturer) and adding advertising, in the form of printing or ink stamp, to allow the cards to function as its own advertising vehicle at modest cost. In this case, the overprint advertises "Your Out! If You Don't Eat Close's Oppie Dildocks - Made By - The George Close Co. - Cambridge, Mass." All E94 overprints are extremely rare. The overprint on this card is a very bold and striking blue that really stands out, which is ideal for an E94 overprint example. E94 is one of the most desirable and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. Although cards from this set are found with seven different background colors, collectors have come to appreciate purple backgrounds not only for their aesthetics but for their rarity (they are thought by many to be the scarcest). The offered card displays vibrant colors, a crisp image, strong corners, and full, white borders. The reverse features a checklist for the set. While at a glance E94s might be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Caramel cards are rarely found in high grade, This is a superb, high-grade purple-background card from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue.
