Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Presented is an absolutely stunning, numerically graded example of card #1 Checklist American League from the extraordinarily rare 1968 Topps Plaks test set. The card features color portraits of each of the twelve American League players in the set, including Mickey Mantle, Al Kaline, Harmon Killebrew, Jim Hunter, Frank Robinson, and Carl Yastrzemski. This is one of the rarest sets of all 1960s Topps test issues. This is one of the few Topps sets from the 1960s that make 1968 Topps 3-Ds look common! This set was never issued to the public, and fewer than 100 examples are known to exist. The offered card has been assigned a numerical grade, which is rarely seen from this issue, as most examples seen in the collecting community are hand-cut from a sheet and remain encapsulated in "Authentic" holders. This is the first numerically graded "American League" example we have offered in the past 21 years! This example is bright, crisp, and clean, with four strong corners, bold colors, and perfect player images. Light creasing, a few surface indentations, and a spot of paper loss along the right border on the reverse. This is one of the most interesting, attractive, and high-quality of all Topps test issues. Ironically, this contrasts drastically with the quirky plastic Plaks themselves, which are being checklisted by these beautiful cards, and which have a completely different charm to Topps test issue collectors. The checklist cards have been largely overlooked in the marketplace in part due to their rarity, but are a favorite of advanced star collectors who are aware of the set. This is a very attractive and numerically graded example from this rare and substantial Topps test issue, with a far better appearance than its technical grade might suggest.
