Description

Presented is a near-complete set (minus two) of 1922 V61 Neilson's Chocolate (Type 1) cards highlighted by twenty-one Hall of Famers, including Walter Johnson and Rogers Hornsby. Missing only #30 Cobb and #37 Ruth (offered as separate lots in this auction) for completion. The V61 Neilson's Chocolate series is one of the most substantial and overlooked sets from the 1920s. This classic 1920-era issue includes many of the great stars and Hall of Famers of the decade. Issued one card per chocolate bar, Neilson's Chocolate cards are almost never found in high grade (especially the Type 1 cards, which are printed on somewhat thin stock, with slightly glossy surfaces that are so easily creased). All 118 cards presented here have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. This is only the second completely graded set (minus two) of 1922 V61 Neilson's Chocolate (Type 1) that we have ever offered and one of the few times that such a large assembly has been brought to market. PSA Grading Composite: EX-MT 6 (1 card): #111. EX+ 5.5 (1 card): #52. EX 5 (7 cards): #17, 19, 28, 83, 85, 96, and 108. VG-EX+ 4.5 (3 cards): #4, 41, 117 Wheat. VG-EX 4 (32 cards): #11, 12 Sewell, 14 Faber, 16, 20, 21, 23, 29 E. Collins, 33, 34, 39, 44 Hoyt, 46, 54, 56, 59, 63, 67, 74, 75, 86, 88, 90 Maranville, 91, 94, 100, 102, 103 Haines, 104, 107, 110, and 116. VG+ 3.5 (6 cards): #25, 36, 38, 49, 57, and 93. VG 3 (38): #2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 13 Hooper, 15, 18, 22, 31, 32 Sisler, 40, 43, 48, 50, 51, 53, 55, 58, 60, 61, 62 Frisch, 66, 68, 69 Alexander, 71 Carey, 72, 73 Bancroft, 77, 82, 87, 95, 97, 109, 112, 113, 114, and 119 Kelly. GOOD+ 2.5 (8 cards): #24, 45, 47 Johnson, 70, 76, 78, 92, and 101. GOOD 2 (10 cards): #6, 7, 26, 27 Heilmann, 42, 64, 89 Grimes, 99, 105, and 120. FAIR 1.5 (4 cards): #35 (MC), 98, 106 Young, and 118. POOR 1 (8 cards): #1, 8 Goslin, 65, 79 Roush, 80, 81 Hornsby, 84, and 115. The near-set is in fairly consistent condition and, as can be seen at a glance, includes many highlights. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a near-complete set of this very scarce and overlooked early 1920s issue. Total: 118 cards. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
