Graded VG 3 by PSA. The legend of Joe Jackson is monumental in our hobby. Though he was one of the greatest players to ever take the field, his lifetime banishment from the game, which was only recently lifted, made him larger than life. The offered card was produced 20 years after Jackson and seven other "Black Sox" were banned from the game by Judge Landis for throwing the 1919 World Series. Interestingly, the back of this card makes no mention of this. It states that "he was traded to the White Sox in 1915 and was with them until he stopped playing after the 1920 season." Unfortunately for collectors, there are few vintage cards of Joe Jackson. This 1940 Play Ball card is one of the few and is particularly fascinating as it was issued when the memory of the scandal was still fresh in the minds of baseball fans. The offered card has superb image clarity, honest corner wear, a crease in the upper left, and a boldly printed reverse (advertising for the Superman set printed along the bottom of the reverse). This is a solid mid-grade example of this classic Jackson card.
