Description

Original cabinet photo of pitcher Barney Pelty taken by noted Boston photographer Carl Horner, which was later used in the production of Pelty's 1909 T204 Ramly tobacco card and 1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life card. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it as an "Original Type 1 Horner Photograph." The formal studio photograph captures Pelty as a member of the St. Louis Browns. Horner's credit stamp appears along the base of the mount. Pelty's name is written in pencil on the reverse. Carl Horner was one of the preeminent baseball photographers of his era, and because Boston was home to both an American and National League franchise, he was able to capture nearly every Major League player at one time or another during the early 1900s. This particular cabinet comes with the provenance of originating directly from the personal collection of Barney Pelty (which appeared at public auction in 2022), who was a member of the St. Louis Browns from 1903 to 1912. Photos used in the production of trading cards have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially those relating to classic prewar-card issues. This is one of only a small number of vintage photos we have seen featuring a player image used in the T204 or M116 sets. The photo (3-7/8 x 5-1/2 inches) has scattered spots of foxing but otherwise is in Excellent condition, while the mount (5-1/4 x 7-1/4 inches) displays a few small spots of paper loss on the borders and reverse (from being framed at one time). In Good condition overall.
