Lot # 4275: 1939 R173 Gum Inc. "The World in Arms" SGC-Graded Near-Complete Set (39/48)

Presented is a near-complete set of 1939 R173 Gum Inc. "The World in Arms" consisting of thirty-nine different cards, out of forty-eight in the set, each professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC. Present are seven duplicates. The "The World in Arms" set features some of the finest artwork of any Gum, Inc., production. The set is organized into six separate series, each with a different theme relating to the arms of the world: "Airplanes (A)," "Ships (S)," "Iron Calvary (C)," "Field Artillery (FA)," "Fortifications (FO)," and "Miscellaneous (M)." Created in the same era as the gruesome "Horrors of War" issue, the R173 World in Arms series focuses on the weapons used by countries involved in the war efforts. In the following grading composite and list of missing cards, the letters after the card numbers correspond to one of the six series that this issue is split into. SGC Grading Composite: EX+ 70 (1 card): #7S. EX 60 (5 cards): #6M, 7S, 8S, 9S, and 14A. VG/EX+ 55 (2 cards): #8S and 16A. VG/EX 50 (1 card): #4FA. VG+ 45 (2 cards): #1M and 6S. VG 40 (11 cards): #1M, 2A, 3C, 4FO, 5A, 7S, 8M, 9A, 10A, 12S, and 13A. GOOD+ 35 (4 cards): #1A, 1S, 2M, and 3FO. GOOD 30 (8 cards): #1C, 2FO, 3S, 3C, 4FA, 6S, 7A, and 11A. FAIR 20 (8 cards): #2C, 3A, 4S, 4C, 6A, 8A, 11S, and 12A. POOR 10 (4 cards): #1FA, 2FA, 2S, and 5S. Missing the following nine cards for completion: #1FO, 3M, 3FA, 4M, 4P, 5M, 7M, 10S, and 15P. Compared to baseball cards of the era, these early nonsport cards, which are at least as scarce, represent a particularly outstanding value. Total: 46 cards (near set of 39 plus 7 duplicates).
