Lot # 168: 1910 E93 Standard Caramel SGC-Graded Near Complete Set (28/30)

Rarely seen near-complete set of E93 Standard Caramel consisting of 28 different cards (out of 30 in the set), entirely graded and encapsulated by SGC. Missing only Cobb and Wagner for completion. This classic set, issued in 1910 by the Standard Caramel Co. of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has a remarkable 16 (of the 18) Hall of Famers, highlighted by many of the greatest stars of the era, including Christy Mathewson, Cy Young, Eddie Plank, Nap Lajoie, Addie Joss, and Hal Chase. The E93 set is closely related to several other candy sets from the era which share the same format and, in many cases, the same player image. Like most 1910-era tobacco and "E" card issues, E93 Standard Caramel Company cards each measure approximately 1.5 x 2.75 inches. The set is composed almost exclusively of Hall of Famers and major stars. SGC Grading Composite: VG 40 (2 cards): Donovan and Jones. GOOD 30 (4 cards, all HOFers): Bender, Chance, Clarke, and Griffith. FAIR 20 (8 cards): Ames, Brown (HOF), Evers (HOF), Leach, Pastorious, Phillippi, Waddell (HOF), and Wiltse. POOR 10 (14 cards): Chase, Coveleskie, Collins (HOF), Delehanty, Dooin, Gibson, Jennings (HOF), Joss (HOF), Lajoie (HOF), Mathewson (HOF), McGraw (HOF), Plank (HOF), Tinker (HOF), and Young (HOF). Because they were issued with candy to kids, one card per package, caramel cards in general tend to survive in far lesser condition than their more common tobacco-card counterparts.
