Description

Presented are two sets (one near-complete and one partial) of the 1985 Topps "Garbage Pail Kids" stickers, representing the first two original series of this popular 1980s nonsport issue. Also included are four variations and eleven duplicates. Clearly a parody of Coleco's popular Cabbage Patch Kids dolls (which ultimately led to a trademark infringement lawsuit), Topps Garbage Pail Kids cards were the brainchild of Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman (of Maus graphic novel fame), who was also the main creator of Topps Wacky Packages. Each sticker features a humorously drawn cartoon kid with a rhyming, alliterative, or word-play nickname. Topps Garbage Pail Kids stickers were an instant hit with youngsters, with many schools banning them because of their edgy content and the distractions they caused. This pair consists of the following: 1) Series 1 Near-Complete Set (71/82) Plus Two Variations and 11 Duplicates: Condition is 26% Ex (including a few higher), 69% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 5% lesser (one Gd and three Pr). Missing the following eleven stickers for completion: #7b, 11b, 14b, 18b, 20b, 27b, 28b, 34b, 35b, 38b, and 39b. Includes both back variations for two stickers (#5a and 8b). #5b is a "Stupid Student" back, 8a is a "Cheaters License" back, and 29a and b are both checklist backs. Keys: #1a Nasty Nick (Vg), 1b Evil Eddie (Pr, pen marks), 8a Adam Bomb (Ex, "Cheaters License" back), 8b Blasted Billy (Pr due to pen on reverse, checklist back), and 8b Blasted Billy (Vg-Ex+, "Cheaters License" back). Duplicates (11): Two #7a, two 14a, two 18a, 22b, 28a, 34a, 39a, and 42a. 2) Series 2 Partial Set (52/84) Plus Two Variations: Condition is 48% Ex to Ex-Mt and 52% Vg to Vg-Ex (including one Pr). Missing the following thirty-two stickers for completion: #44a, 44b, 45a, 46b, 48a, 53a, 53b, 54a, 54b, 55b, 60a, 61a, 61b, 62b, 63a, 63b, 65a, 65b, 68a, 69a, 70a, 71b, 72a, 74b, 75a, 76a, 77a, 78a, 78b, 79a, 81b, and 83b. Includes both back variations for two stickers (#42a and 42b). #49b is the original "Schizo Fran" front variation. This is a very attractive collection of mid-grade stickers from these popular 1980s nonsport sets. Total: 138 stickers (set pair of 123 plus four variations and eleven duplicates).
