Description

Presented is an attractive mixed-grade collection of thirteen 1953 Glendale Meats, each professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC. In the world of early 1950s regional issues, few deserve more respect than the 28-card set of Detroit Tigers issued by Glendale Meats. Their striking design and legendary rarity have always made Glendales one of the most significant and desirable regional issues of the era. Issued one card per pack of Glendale hot dogs, kids had to be dedicated to hot dogs to consider building a serious collection. The reverse of each card invites youngsters to collect the set and mail them in to Glendale to potentially win one of three pairs of tickets to the World Series. The Art Houtteman card (not included in this collection) is extremely rare, and is certainly one of the great regional issue rarities of the era. With so few examples known (please note there is an example being offered separately in this auction), it is almost certain that Houtteman was intentionally short printed and that this short printing perhaps relates to the Glendale contest offer. Because of how they were issued, condition has always been a problem with Glendales. These cards, however, definitely have a special charm to them, even in low grade. SGC Grading Composite: GOOD+ 2.5 (1 card): Nieman. GOOD 2 (3 cards): Hoeft, Kuenn, and Mullin. FAIR 1.5 (4 cards): Gray, Lund, Pesky, and Souchock. POOR 1 (4 cards): Batts, Herbert, Sullivan, and Wight. Authentic (1 card): Garver (altered). A rare opportunity to acquire a sizeable collection (almost half of the set) of this classic 1950s regional food issue. Total: 13 cards. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
