Description

Graded EX+ 5.5 by SGC. Philadelphia Athletics (pose #28-1). This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher! It is interesting to note that the iconic team name "Pirates" was actually formed when Bierbauer was not resigned by the Athletics before the start of 1891 season. When it became known around the leagues that Bierbauer was available, the Pittsburgh club made him a substantial offer that he accepted. The Athletics filed an official complaint and called the acquisition "piratical." The reference originally was meant to be an insult but eventually was embraced by team ownership and the Pittsburgh fans.
