Description

Collection of forty-eight 1930s premiums composed primarily of 1936 R313 National Chicle "Fine Pens" and 1936 R314 Goudey "Wide Pens," with a few Gold Medal Foods and Worch Cigar premiums. The collection is highlighted by nineteen signed premiums, including Hall of Famers Earl Averill, Charlie Gehringer, and Lefty Gomez. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1933 Worch Cigar (2 cards): Averill (small pencil marks on reverse, otherwise Vg+, HOF) and Harder (small pencil marks on reverse, otherwise Vg). 2) 1933-1934 Worch Cigar American Association (4 cards): All technically Pr due to back damage with very presentable appearances from the fronts. Includes: Gaffke, Hudson, Marchaud, and Orwald (Orwoll). 3) 1934 R313A Gold Medal Foods (1 signed card): Paul Dean (signed, pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex). 4) 1936 R313 "Fine Pen" (21 cards, 6 signed): Condition is Pr to Fr overall, with two Gd and one Vg. Includes: Bolton, Byrd, Campbell, Crosetti (signed), Lefty Gomez (signed with personalization, trimmed and extra paper on reverse, HOF), Left Gomez (tape repair on reverse, otherwise Pr, HOF), Hack, Hale, Harder, Jenson/pitching (signed), Martin (signed), Newsom (signed, postal usse), Rogel, G. Walker, Werber, West, Wiltshere (signed), Paul Waner/Lloyd Waner/Jim Weaver (HOF), Jim Bottomley/C. Gelbert (HOF), Luke Sewell blocks runner at plate, and 1936 Chicago White Sox. 5) 1936 R314 "Wide Pen" (20 cards, 12 signed): Condition is Pr to Fr overall, with one Gd. Includes: Averill (signed, HOF), Bartell/sliding (signed), Castleman/throwing (signed), Coscarart (signed), Gerhringer (signed, HOF), Grace, Haas (signed), Harder (signed), Harder (1937, Type 4), Lavagetto (signed), Marcum (signed), T. Moore, Moses (signed), Newsom, Ostermueller, Piet (signed, slight trim and extra paper on reverse), Reis, Tamulis, Werber (signed), and Wes Ferrell/Rick Ferrell (HOF). Premiums have received relatively little attention from collectors compared to traditional gum cards of the era, and a case can easily be made that they represent one of the best values of all 1930s baseball issues. This is a very presentable lower-grade collection of premiums highlighted by nineteen signed examples. Total: 48 cards. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
