Lot # 18: 1880s H804-10 "Corner Clefs" Baseball Trade Card SGC-Graded Complete Set (8)

Extremely attractive complete set of H804-10 "Corner Clefs" trade cards. This set of eight cards issued in the 1880s is colorfully illustrated with drawings of various baseball scenes on a light green background and a short caption at the bottom. These cards were produced for merchants to use as promotional advertising cards, as seen on four of the cards in this lot with ads for Standish's Cream Caramels (3) and Marshall & Ball (1). Seven of the eight cards have blank backs, with "Hold Your Base" having Marshall & Ball advertising print on both the front and reverse. Each card has been professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC and, as can easily be seen, presents much better than the assigned grade. SGC Grading Composite: VG/EX 50 (1 card): Our Side Has Won (Standish). VG+ 45 (1 card): Hold Your Base. VG 40 (3 cards): A Fly (Standish), Score One (Standish), and The Umpire. GOOD+ 35 (1 card): A Twister. GOOD 30 (2 cards): A Heavy Hit and A Short Stop. Four cards show some evidence of glue residue from mounting at one point in time which accounts for the low technical grades. The cards otherwise have an Excellent appearance!
