Lot # 22: 1884 Lawson's Base Ball Game Playing Card Complete Set (36) Including 37 PSA-Graded Cards Plus Original Box and 28 Duplicates

Issued in 1884 by the Lawson Card Company of Boston, Massachusetts, the Lawson's playing-card set features thirty-six cards with extremely striking baseball-related designs. The backs feature a very attractive baseball scene in blue and white (included are four cards featuring the rarer burgundy back). Offered is a complete 36-card standard-edition Lawson's set plus 28 duplicates. Thirty-seven cards (including twelve duplicates) have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. PSA Grading Composite: MINT 9 (7 cards): Striker, Wild Throw, Pick Up (Burgundy), Baseman 3, Fly Ball, 3 Strikes, and 3 Strikes Missed. NM-MT+ 8.5 (3 cards): Base Hit 2, Fly Muff, and 3 Strikes Out. NM-MT 8 (9 cards): Forced Out, Grounder (Burgundy), Base Hit 3, Home Run, Baseman 1, Baseman 2 (Burgundy), Fly Catch, Foul Ball, and Foul Muff. NM 7 (5 cards): 7 Balls, Base Hit 1, Catcher, Umpire, and Foul Catch. EX-MT 6 (1 card): Rules Card. EX 5 (2 cards): Fly Catch and Fly Ball. VG-EX 4 (4 cards): Base Hit 2 (Burgundy), Base Hit 3, Home Run (MK), and 3 Strikes Missed. VG 3 (3 cards): Forced Out, Baseman 1, and Foul Ball. GOOD 2 (3 cards): Base Hit 2, Foul Catch, and Rules Card. The condition of the 29-card unencapsulated balance is four Nr/Mt, Ex, five Vg to Vg-Ex, and nineteen lesser (mostly Fr to Gd and mostly due to staining). This collection is accompanied by the original 20-page instruction booklet explaining the rules of the game, which features a black-and-white woodcut of a batter on the cover, and three "value of cards" cards (two PSA graded and Fr), which explain the scoring of the game. The instructions booklet is complete and intact, with creasing and small tears to front and back covers. The original box grades due to splits at the edges, moderate creasing, light soiling, and missing top flaps.
