Description

This 1989 Perez-Steele Celebration set features 26 signed examples of the 41 cards that could have possibly been autographed in the 44-card set (Lefty Gomez, Judy Johnson, and Bill Terry passed away during production of the set). The offered set is complete with all 44 issued cards, the checklist, and both the original album and presentation box. The Perez-Steele Celebration set was issued in 1989 (with no updates) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame and the 10th anniversary of the Perez-Steele Galleries. Issued in cooperation with the Hall of Fame, it is one of the most beautifully designed and elaborately produced sets issued in modern times. The issue was limited to 10,000 sets (which immediately sold out) and featured cards for 44 Hall of Famers who were living at the time the set was conceived (in consideration of autograph collectors) plus a checklist. The artwork on the cards was done in the style of the W. S. Kimball tobacco set of 1888. The offered set is #07468. All the signatures are penned in blue Sharpie on the front of the cards. The 26 signed cards in this set are the following: Aparicio, Berra, Boudreau, Chandler, Doerr, Ferrell, Herman, Hunter, Irvin, Kaline, Kell, Killebrew, Kiner, Lemon, Leonard, Mantle, Marichal, Mathews, Mize, Musial, B. Robinson, Slaughter, Snider, Spahn, Stargell, and B. Williams. The eighteen unsigned cards are those of Aaron, Banks, Bell, Bench, Campanella, Conlan, Dandridge, Dickey, Gehringer, Gomez, J. Johnson, Lopez, McCovey, Reese, Sewell, Terry, T. Williams, and Yastrzemski. The cards and album are housed in a presentation box, as issued, and are in Excellent condition overall (downgraded due to green markings in the corners from the storage box). The presentation box (13.5 x 10.5 x 2 inches) has light wear and green felt particles scattered throughout the interior. In Very Good condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
