Near-complete set of 99 cards (out of 108) from the 1948 Bowman series, the first football-card set issued by the company. This significant set is highlighted by key rookie cards of many stars and Hall of Famers. The nine cards missing for completion are: #9, 18, 21, 26 Waterfield, 51, 95, 96, 104, and 105. Condition is 24% Gd to Vg and 76% Pr to Fr (including one altered and one trimmed). Keys: #1 Tereshinski RC (Pr), 3 Lujack RC (Pr-Fr), 7 Van Buren RC (Pr), 12 Conerly RC (corners torn off), 17 Trippi RC (Fr), 22 Baugh RC (Pr), 36 Turner RC (Pr), 61 Wojciechowicz RC (Pr), 63 Pihos RC (Pr), 80 Dudley RC (0/100 centering in both directions, otherwise Vg+), 99 Gilmer RC (Vg), 107 Luckman RC (Pr), and 108 Ray RC (Fr). Bowman football cards never caught on quite like its baseball cards, but Bowman's commitment to the line was unwavering. Bowman continued to issue ever more elaborately designed football sets until its doors closed in 1955. This set was the first football venture, and while the 1952 Bowman Large issue has always received the most attention from collectors, many feel that the 1948 Bowman set is actually the rarer of the two. A relatively affordable opportunity to acquire a lower-grade near-complete set of 1948 Bowman football, loaded with many great stars and Hall of Famers of the era. Total: 99 cards.
