Description

Rawlings "Syracuse Chiefs" souvenir baseball signed by Elston Howard, former American League MVP and the first black player in New York Yankees history. Howard has inscribed the ball in blue ink on a side panel. According to PSA/DNA, there are signatures removed to give the ball the appearance of a Elston Howard single. The professional removal or covering of signatures on baseballs has become a cottage industry in recent times, carried out by a few skilled practitioners. Though many purists deride such practices, there are also collectors who welcome the service. Single-signed balls did not become the ideal for autograph collectors until the late 1980s/early 1990s. Howard passed away in 1980 and his signature alone on a baseball is highly prized by collectors today. The ball remains in Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
