Description

Scarce N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of Fred Carroll of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." This card has a strong image, corner rounding, and surface wear along the lower left quadrant. Encapsulated as Authentic by SGC (submitted by REA), it appears that color has been added to the lower right. The blank-backed reverse shows scattered discolorations. A very pleasing sample from this rare and unusual Old Judge-related nineteenth-century issue.
