Description

Issued in 1936 by Goudey Gum and catalogued R314 in the ACC, this large-format (3-1/4 x 5-1/2 inches) black-and-white series is printed on thin stock and is known to collectors as "Wide Pens" because of the thick font used for the facsimile autographs. R314 Goudey premiums were not sold in packs like 1933 Goudey but were actually handed out from behind the counter at candy stores with purchases of Goudey gum. Offered is a substantial collection of forty-eight different premiums (plus two duplicates and a 1934 Gold Medal Flour premium), highlighted by eight Hall of Famers, including DiMaggio/McCarthy, Dickey, Simmons, and both Waner brothers. R314 premiums have received relatively little attention from collectors, in part due to the fact that they are larger than standard cards and are blank-backed with no identification of the issuer. A case could be made that they represent one of the best values among all 1930s issues. Condition is 19% Vg-Ex to Ex (including one Ex-Mt), 34% Gd to Vg, and 47% Pr to Fr (mostly due to writing or glue on the reverses). Moore, Moriarty, Moses, Newsom, Ostermueller, Pytlak, Riggs, Sewell, Simmons (Ex, HOF), Swift, Tamulis, Taylor, Travis, Trosky, Urbanski, Vaughan (Pr-Fr due to back damage, HOF), L. Waner (Pr-Fr due to back damage, HOF), P. Waner (Pr-Fr due to back damage, HOF), Warneke, two Werber, and Joe DiMaggio/Joe McCarthy (Vg+, HOF). Also includes one 1934 Gold Medal Flour Joe Medwick (ink writing on reverse, otherwise Vg, HOF).
