Lot # 934: 1935 UM7 Rice-Stix Paul "Daffy" Dean SGC NM 84

Graded NM 84 by SGC. This is the only example graded at this level by SGC with just one higher. Superb example of Cardinals pitcher Paul "Daffy" Dean from the 1935 Rice-Stix series, issued by a St. Louis clothing manufacturer. The Dean brothers, Dizzy and Paul, comprise a complete two-card set. The Rice-Stix cards are one of the rarest, most colorful, unusual, and highest-quality card sets of the era. Few card issues of any era can compare with the beauty and production quality of Rice-Stix cards. They are often overlooked by collectors, primarily because they are so rare, but also because the set has just two cards. The offered card is an extremely strong example, with an outstanding image, brilliant colors, and strong corners. The reverse is clean and boldly printed. When Paul “Daffy” Dean joined his brother “Dizzy” on the Cardinals in 1934, Dizzy predicted that, between them, they would win 45 games. Incredibly, his boast was an underestimate, as the brothers went on to win a combined 49 games! The Deans carried their excellence into the 1934 World Series, where they accounted for all four of the Cardinals’ wins. These rare cards were produced not long after their World Series heroics. This is an extremely desirable and very seldom offered sample from this rare and striking set.
