Lot # 737: 1932 Fleer Gum "Whiz Bang" Lefty Grove SGC NM/MT 88 - One of Only Two Graded Examples!

Graded NM/MT 88 by SGC. One of only two examples graded by either SGC or PSA! Extremely rare example of Philadelphia Athletics Hall of Famer Lefty Grove from the unusual and distinctive "Whiz-Bang Gum" series issued in 1932 by the Frank H. Fleer Corporation of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This fascinating issue was not even known to exist until REA discovered a complete box in 2009. The set features notable Major League stars and Hollywood celebrities. The only three ballplayers included in the set are Hall of Famers Lefty Grove, Goose Goslin, and Gabby Hartnett. The premium cards, which are circular in design (each 3 inches in diameter) with four triangular protrusions, feature portrait images of each subject with his name printed along the base (along with team or movie studio affiliation in most cases). A spiral pattern is printed on the reverse. The offered example is in exceptional condition and likely originated from the "REA find," as all examples from that find were miraculously in top condition, as seen here. The card has two very tiny factory-punched holes in the center, likely intended for a string that allowed the card to be propelled or twirled in the air. This is an extraordinary card from this unusual and rare early 1930s issue.
