Description

Very crisp, clean, and sharp-looking near-complete set of 1957-1958 Topps Basketball consisting of seventy-seven different cards (out of eighty in the set). Missing the following three cards for completion: #17 Cousy, 23, and 77 Russell. Condition is 53% Ex to Ex-Mt (including a couple Nr/Mt) and 47% Vg to Vg-Ex (including a few lesser). We have selected four cards for grading and encapsulation by SGC. Keys: #1 Clifton (Vg+), 2 Yardley RC (Vg-Ex+), 3 Johnston RC (Vg-Ex+), 5 Sharman RC (NM 7), 10 Arizin RC (Ex), 12 Martin RC (15/85 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), 13 Schayes RC (Ex+), 15 Ramsey RC (NM 7), 16 McGuire RC (Ex), 19 Heinsohn RC (VG/EX+ 4.5), 24 Pettit RC (EX 5), 27 Macauley RC (Ex+), 28 Mikkelsen RC (Vg-Ex), 29 Naulls SP (Vg-Ex+), 32 Kerr SP (Ex-Mt), 33 Costello RC (Vg+), 37 Hagan RC (Ex), 39 Loscutoff SP (Vg-Ex), 42 Stokes RC (Ex), 43 Hundley RC (15/85 L/R, otherwise Ex+), 44 Gola RC (Ex), 56 Houbregs (Ex), 59 Bianchi SP (Vg-Ex), 62 Gallatin RC (Gd), 71 Twyman RC (Vg-Ex+), 74 Leonard SP (Ex), 75 Phillip SP (Vg-Ex), 78 Lovellette RC (Vg-Ex+), and 80 Schnittker SP (Ex). This is Topps' first basketball set, and the only basketball set Topps issued during the 1950s. It apparently did not sell well as Topps did not follow up with another basketball set until 1969. The set includes the rookie cards of all of the major stars of the era. 1957 Topps Basketball is well known for production-related problems, making the assembling of high-quality sets particularly challenging. This is a very attractive near-complete set of this extremely significant basketball issue. Total: 77 cards.
