Description

Presented is a partial set of 1957-1958 Topps Basketball consisting of sixty-three different cards (out of eighty in the set). Missing the following seventeen cards for completion: #4, 11, 17 Cousy, 18, 21, 23, 30, 31, 35, 43 Hundley, 45, 46, 49, 62 Gallatin, 77 Russell, 78 Lovellette, and 79. Condition is 29% Ex or slightly better, 48% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 23% lesser. Keys: #1 Clifton (Gd), 2 Yardley RC (Ex), 3 Johnston RC (Vg+), 5 Sharman RC (Vg-Ex), 10 Arizin RC (Pr-Fr due to pinhole), 12 Martin RC (Vg-Ex), 13 Schayes RC (Ex), 15 Ramsey RC (Vg+), 16 McGuire RC (Pr due to pinhole), 19 Heinsohn RC (Pr-Fr due to pinhole), 24 Pettit RC (Vg-Ex), 27 Macauley RC (0/100 T/B and 5/95 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex+), 28 Mikkelsen RC (Vg), 29 Naulls SP (Ex), 32 Kerr SP (Vg+), 33 Costello RC (Vg-Ex), 37 Hagan RC (Vg-Ex), 39 Loscutoff SP (Vg+), 42 Stokes RC (Vg-Ex), 44 Gola RC (next card showing, otherwise Ex), 56 Houbregs (20/80 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 59 Bianchi SP (Pr), 71 Twyman RC (Gd+), 74 Leonard SP (Ex), 75 Phillip SP (Pr-Fr due to pinhole), and 80 Schnittker SP (Vg). This is Topps' first basketball set, and the only basketball set Topps issued during the 1950s. It apparently did not sell well as Topps did not follow up with another basketball set until 1969. 1957 Topps Basketball is well known for production-related problems, making the assembling of high-quality sets particularly challenging. This is an attractive medium- to lower-grade partial set of this extremely significant basketball issue. Total: 63 cards.
