Near-complete set of 62 different cards (out of 64) from the classic 1921 Exhibits series. This near-complete set includes 19 Hall of Famers. Missing Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb for completion. 1921 was the first year the Exhibit Supply Company of Chicago issued cards. It would go on to issue sets for the next 50 years. These cards were sold by Exhibit card machines at amusement parks and penny arcades, one penny per card. When this set was issued, it happened to be a great era for Hall of Famers. Even without Ruth and Cobb, this near-complete set is still loaded. Hall of Famers include Grover Alexander, Walter Johnson, Rogers Hornsby, Eddie Collins, and Tris Speaker, and 14 others. Twenty-six cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA (15) and SGC (11). PSA Grading Composite: EX 5 (1 card): Grimes (MK). VG-EX+ 4.5 (1 card): Bush. VG-EX 4 (2 cards): Gowdy and Neale (MK). VG 3 (3 cards): E. Collins (MK), Faber, and Rice. GOOD 2 (5 cards): Dugan, Naylor, Olson (SGC 30), Powell (MK), and Shocker (MK). FAIR 1.5 (4 cards): Burns (SGC 20), Holke (SGC 20), Perkins (SGC 20), and Wheat (SGC 20). POOR 1 (9 cards): Alexander (SGC 10), Haines, Johnson (SGC 10), S. Jones (SGC 10), Maranville (SGC 10), Mays, Schalk (MK), Speaker (SGC 10), and Tobin (SGC 10). Authentic (1 card): Coveleski. The condition of the 36-card unencapsulated balance is 11% Vg-Ex, 36% Gd to Vg, and 53% Pr to Fr. Unencapsulated Keys: Bancroft (marks on reverse, otherwise Gd), Carey (Vg+), Frisch (Pr), Harris (Vg), Hornsby (Vg-Ex), Kelly (Pr), Peckinpaugh ("MADE IN U.S." hand stamp on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), and Sisler (Vg+). In addition to its significance as the Exhibit Supply Company's first set, this near-complete Exhibits set is extremely substantial, offers far rarer cards than many other sets from the era and represents an extraordinary collecting value for quality cards from the 1920s. Total: 62 cards. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
