Lot # 4509: 1930s John Player & Sons and Carreras Ltd. Film Stars and Soccer Collection (411 Cards) Including Sets in Original Albums

Presented is a very substantial collection of 411 British trading cards depicting film stars and soccer subjects. The collections includes many famous actors and actresses from the golden age of cinema, including Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Jean Harlow, Katherine Hepburn, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Jimmy Stewart, Mae West, and Johnny Weismuller. A total of 284 cards are glued into six original albums as intended. Included are two additional empty Carreras' "Slip -In" albums from which the 127-card balance was removed. The cards glued into the albums are by nature low-grade, with the fronts mostly presenting from Ex to Nr/Mt condition, with 15% lesser. The albums themselves are in medium- to lower-grade condition overall, with most showing marks, creasing, and soiling. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1934-1938 John Player & Sons "Film Stars" (199 cards glued into four albums): Consists of two complete Series 1 albums (2 sets, 50 cards per set), a complete Series 2 album (50 cards), and a near-complete Series 3 album (49 out of 50 cards, missing only #20 Knowles for completion). 2) 1934 John Player & Sons "Hints on Association Football" (85 cards glued into two albums): Consists of a near-complete album (47 out of 50 cards, missing only #2, 21, and 32 for completion) and a partial set (38 out of 50 cards, missing #19-30, including the album pages, for completion). 3) 1935 Carreras Ltd. "Film Stars" Partial Set (34/54): Ranging from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex), with a few lesser. 4) 1938 Carreras Ltd. "Film Stars" Second Series (22 different cards): Ranging from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex), with a couple lesser. 5) 1939 Carreras Ltd. "Film & Stage Beauties" (8 small-version cards): Vg-Ex overall, with a couple lesser. Includes the following: #1, 22, 36, 42, 43, 44, 48, and 54. 6) 1939 Gallaher Ltd. "My Favourite Part" Near-Complete Set (44/48): Ranging from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex). Missing the following four cards for completion: #13 Judy Garland, 20, 23, and 45. 7) 1951 Turf Cigarettes "Celebrities of British History" Partial Set (19/50): Ranging from Pr to Vg (averaging Fr). Keys include Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, and William Shakespeare. Total: 411 cards and 8 albums.
