Graded GOOD+ 2.5 by SGC. Very attractive 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card featuring Hall of Famer John Ward (#478-9 pose) of the New York Giants. It is interesting to note that the offered cabinet card features a "close-up" image of this particular pose (this pose is also known with a "zoomed-out" image). Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher and later a standout shortstop for the New York Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League Baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward served as the leader of the short-lived renegade Players League. The offered card features superb photo clarity and even corner wear. A few faint marks are visible on the reverse. This is an extremely high-quality Old Judge cabinet card of Hall of Famer John Ward.
